Research Paper Sessions: A Short Guide
The 3E Conference uses an unplugged, paper-in-advance format that values presence, dialogue, and shared thinking. Sessions are designed to support the development of ideas in a respectful, collegial environment. On this page, you will find practical guidance on how to prepare for research paper sessions, how the sessions are organised, and how presenters, moderators, and participants can best contribute to thoughtful, engaging conversations.
Before you arrive
- All papers are available digitally and shared with participants by email in advance.
- Participants are expected to read the research papers before attending the session.
- The conference programme is also digital only – please check the latest version.
- There are no prepared slides or printed materials.
Session format
- Each paper session lasts 35 minutes:
- 10 minutes: Presenter introduction
- 25 minutes: Open discussion
- Please keep to time so participants can move smoothly between sessions.
Unplugged by design
There are no computers, projectors, or PowerPoint. Each room provides simple physical resources:
- Whiteboard or flip chart
- Marker pens
- Sticky notes and basic stationery
These tools are there to support discussion, not to replace slides. They are best used as a shared thinking space — capturing ideas, questions, or themes as they emerge in real time.
For presenters
- Assume your audience has read your paper.
- Use your 10 minutes to:
- Remind us of your key ideas
- Highlight questions, tensions, or areas where feedback would help
- The presenter’s role is closer to a facilitator of dialogue than a lecturer.
- You are encouraged to be natural, reflective, and open to where the discussion may go.
For moderators
Moderators help create a safe and productive space by:
- Keeping time and structure
- Encouraging inclusive, balanced discussion
- Supporting the presenter if needed
- Ensuring the session finishes on time and in a positive spirit
For participants
- Come prepared, curious, and supportive.
- Ask questions that help the presenter think further.
- Contribute thoughtfully and keep comments concise.
- Physical tools (sticky notes, flip charts) may be used to share ideas or questions collectively.
Our shared ethos
3E is a supportive and caring scholarly community. The unplugged format invites us to slow down, listen, and think together — focusing on human connection, open exchange, and the co‑creation of ideas.
